Mayrhofen Lift Pass & Ski Area

Overview

Ski slope in Sauze d'Oulx on - a beautiful sunny day!

The Mayrhofen lift pass gives you access to one of the most popular and varied in the Austrian Alps, sitting at the heart of the Zillertal Valley. With around 142km of pistes and a lift pass that covers the mountains of Penken, Ahorn, Rastkogel, Eggalm and the nearby Hintertux Glacier, it’s a destination that offers something for every level of skier and snowboarder — from first-timers to freeride fans.

The ski area is divided between two main mountains, each with its own personality. The Penken Mountain is known as the “Action Mountain”, home to the legendary Harakiri black run (Austria’s steepest groomed slope at a 78% gradient), perfectly groomed red runs, and the world-class Penken Park — one of Europe’s best freestyle areas. Across the valley, the Ahorn Mountain offers a completely different feel: wide, sunny slopes that are ideal for beginners and intermediates, with plenty of space for carving turns and taking in the views. The 5.5km Valley Run down to Mayrhofen is a must-do at the end of the day.

Your Mayrhofen lift pass also gives access to Rastkogel and Eggalm, two quieter, scenic areas perfect for intermediate skiers looking for long, rolling red runs away from the crowds. For high-altitude adventure, the Hintertux Glacier (included with the Zillertal Superskipass) offers snow-sure skiing nearly all year round and some of the most spectacular alpine views in Austria.

Here’s how the Mayrhofen ski area breaks down by ability:

  • Beginners – Start on Ahorn’s wide, gentle blue runs, ideal for confidence-building with minimal traffic.

  • Intermediates – Head to Penken or Rastkogel for endless red pistes, scenic routes and playful terrain.

  • Advanced skiers and snowboarders – Challenge yourself on the Harakiri black run, explore the Penken off-piste, or venture up to Hintertux for steep glacier descents.

With its mix of high-energy skiing, relaxed mountain vibes and easy access to multiple ski areas, Mayrhofen is one of the most exciting bases in the Zillertal Valley — perfect for skiers and snowboarders who want variety, modern lifts and Austrian mountain charm all in one place.

Freestyle & Snow Parks in Mayrhofen

If you’re into freestyle skiing or snowboarding, the Mayrhofen ski area is one of the best places in Europe to ride. The resort’s main park, PenkenPark, is famous across the Alps for its pro-level setup, incredible atmosphere and perfectly maintained lines. Whether you’re taking your first spin on a box or sending it over a big kicker, this mountain is built for progression.

Located on the Penken Mountain, PenkenPark is split into five zones — Pro Area, Advanced Area, Medium Area, Medium-Jib Area and KidsPark — each designed for different ability levels. The Sun-Jet chairlift runs right alongside the park, so you can easily lap your favourite lines or just sit back and watch the action. The setup includes everything from mellow boxes and rails for first-timers to huge booters and technical features for experienced riders.

For those just starting out, the KidsPark and Medium-Jib Area are perfect places to build confidence, with smaller jumps and wide, forgiving landings. Intermediate riders can step things up in the Medium and Advanced Areas, where the park flows naturally with creative lines and smooth transitions. And if you’re an advanced or expert freestyler, the Pro Area offers a serious challenge — big kicker lines, technical rail setups and a vibe that attracts some of the best riders in Europe.

The freestyle scene in Mayrhofen doesn’t stop there. Across the ski area, you’ll also find fun slopes and boardercross-style tracks, giving everyone a chance to play around on the snow — whether or not you’re into full park laps. Events and competitions take place throughout the season, adding to the energy and making PenkenPark one of the most exciting places to ride in the Zillertal Valley.

From perfectly shaped jumps to the laid-back, creative atmosphere, Mayrhofen’s snow parks have earned their reputation for good reason. It’s the ideal place to push your limits, ride with friends, or just enjoy the buzz of one of Austria’s top freestyle destinations.

    Off-Piste

If you’re looking to leave the groomed tracks behind and explore powder, big faces and hidden bowls, the Mayrhofen ski area is an outstanding choice. With over 300 km of freeride terrain, the region around Mayrhofen offers some of the richest off-piste skiing in the Alps.

Access is excellent: many of the freeride runs are lift-assisted or require only short climbs, making them both thrilling and relatively accessible.

Key freeride zones include the areas around the Rastkogel, the Horberg face and the back-terrain of the Penken side. These zones offer steep chutes, wide powder bowls and long vertical drops every good freerider dreams of.

Safety and local knowledge are critical: avalanche risk, terrain traps and variable snow conditions mean that going off-piste in Mayrhofen is best done with a certified guide.

Whether you’re a seasoned freerider chasing untouched snow or an ambitious intermediate wanting your first taste of off-piste terrain, Mayrhofen delivers. The combination of lift-access, varied terrain and reliable snow make it a top base for your next powder mission.
