When does Sauze d'Oulx open for winter 26/27?
Sauze d'Oulx and the Via Lattea open on 5 December 2026 and close on 11 April 2027. Those dates were confirmed by the lift company on 4 July 2026, unusually early — in most years they are not published until the autumn. Bardonecchia, which shares a pass extension with the Via Lattea, runs to the same dates.
What "open" actually means in early December
This is the part nobody writes down, and it is the reason people book the first week of the season and come back surprised. Opening day is not the day the whole ski area starts working. It is the day the ski area starts working.
- The high ground opens first, and that is the good newsSauze d'Oulx's own skiing starts above the town at Sportinia, and the area climbs to 2,800m. Early in the season the lifts that run are the higher, snow-sure ones, which is exactly where you would want to be in December anyway. What tends not to be running yet is the lower and more peripheral stuff — and the very lowest ground in the linked area sits down at 1,400m, well below the town at 1,509m.
- The first weeks lean towards weekendsBefore the tour operators start bringing guests, the resort is mostly serving Italians up from Turin for the weekend. So in the opening fortnight you will often find noticeably more running on a Saturday or Sunday than on a Tuesday. It is not a rule and it is not published in advance in any useful form — but if you are choosing between a midweek and a weekend trip in early December, the weekend is the safer bet.
- Everything is conditional, and the operator says so itselfVialattea publishes an opening programme for the coming winter, and it describes its own dates as di massima — indicative. Openings can be brought forward or pushed back for snow, for wind, for snowmaking, for maintenance or on the instruction of the local authority. We take that at face value, which is why you will not find us naming a date for any individual lift on this page. Anyone who does is guessing with a straight face.
- By Christmas, the picture is differentFrom the Christmas holidays onwards the area runs properly, and that is when the full 400km across the linked resorts becomes a realistic proposition rather than a number on a pass. If your trip depends on skiing over to Sestriere or out west, that is the point in the calendar from which to plan it.
Choosing your week
The dates tell you when you can come. Here is what each part of the season is actually like in Sauze d'Oulx, so you can pick on something better than the calendar.
- Opening fortnight — cheap, quiet, and a gamblePrices and crowds are at their lowest and the town is at its most local. The trade is that you are skiing a fraction of the area, the lower runs may not have opened, and a warm spell can flatten the week. Come with the right expectation and it is a lovely time to be here; come expecting the full ski area and you will be disappointed.
- Christmas and New Year — everything on, everything busyThe area runs at full tilt, the town is at its liveliest, and it is the most expensive fortnight of the winter by a distance. Book early, and know that this is the one period where the bars and restaurants genuinely need reserving.
- January and February — the sweet spotThe best snow of the winter, the whole linked area open, and outside the half-term weeks it is markedly quieter and cheaper than the holidays. If the skiing is the point of the trip rather than the dates, this is when to come.
- Late season — sun, and a shrinking mapSpring skiing here is genuinely good: long sunny days, soft snow and a quiet mountain. But Sauze d'Oulx is tree-lined and comparatively low, and the lower links thin out first, so the later you go the more the practical ski area contracts towards the high ground. The French end of the map runs later into April than the Italian side does — the coach over is on our Ski Away Day if you want a full day there without the long ski across.

This is the source to trust for a day's plan — we do not copy it here, because a copy is only ever as fresh as the last time somebody looked.

The same dates. Sauze d'Oulx is one of the 8 linked resorts on the Via Lattea and the area runs to a single season, opening on 5 December 2026 and closing on 11 April 2027. Montgènevre, at the French end, is run by a different company and keeps its own calendar — it usually opens earlier and closes later.
Are all the lifts open when the season starts?
No, and they never are. The higher, more snow-sure lifts run first and the lower and more peripheral ones follow, with the full area generally running from the Christmas holidays onwards. The lift company publishes an indicative programme for the winter, but it describes its own dates as approximate and openings move with snow, wind and maintenance — so we do not publish a date for any individual lift. Is it worth skiing in Sauze d'Oulx in early December?
It can be, provided you come for the right reasons. The opening fortnight is the cheapest and quietest time of the winter and the town is at its most local, but you will be skiing a fraction of the area and a warm spell can spoil the week. The first weeks also tend to lean towards weekends, because the resort is largely serving Italian visitors up from Turin before the tour operators start arriving. If you want the whole ski area open, come in January.
When does Sauze d'Oulx close?

Does Bardonecchia open on the same dates?
Yes. Bardonecchia, which longer Via Lattea passes include as a free day, was confirmed for the same season dates as the Via Lattea in the same announcement. The two areas are not lift-linked, so getting between them means the shuttle bus rather than skiing.
When is the best time to ski in Sauze d'Oulx?
January and February, if the skiing is the point. That is when the snow is best and the whole linked area is running, and outside the half-term weeks it is quieter and cheaper than the Christmas holidays. Come at Christmas or New Year for the atmosphere and accept the crowds and the prices; come in early December or late season for value, and accept a smaller ski area.

On the official Vialattea slopes and facilities page and in the Vialattea app, both of which carry live lift and piste status, and on the notices at the lift stations. We deliberately do not reproduce daily status on this page, because a copy is only as current as the last time somebody updated it. The resort webcams are also worth a look, since wind closures on the high links change what is reachable rather than what is technically open.
