Zell Am See Ski Resort
Zell am See is one of those ski resorts that immediately feels special. It’s not just the skiing — though the mix of the Schmittenhöhe, Maiskogel, and the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier gives you an incredible amount of variety — it’s the whole setting. You’ve got a historic lakeside town, mountain views in every direction, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to wander, explore and stay a little longer than planned.
With a single lift pass you can ski three very different areas. Schmittenhöhe is Zell am See’s home mountain, full of tree-lined runs, long reds and the kind of scenic pistes that make you stop just to take it all in. A short bus ride gets you to Kaprun, where Maiskogel offers family-friendly skiing and easy cruising, while the Kitzsteinhorn takes you right up to over 3,000 metres for proper high-altitude glacier skiing — a huge bonus in early or late season.
The views here genuinely are something else. On a clear day you can look out over Lake Zell shimmering below you while the Hohe Tauern peaks stretch out in the distance. It’s the sort of place where even a simple blue run feels memorable.
Zell am See itself has plenty going on: a lively old town, great places to eat, relaxed après spots and lakeside walks if you fancy a slower pace. It attracts a real mix of people too — friends on a ski week, couples looking for a scenic base, families who want everything close by.
If you’re after a resort with character, beautiful scenery and enough variety to keep every day interesting, Zell am See is an easy choice. It’s the kind of place you come back to.
