Private Taxi, Public Transport or Shared Coach Transfer: Which is the Best?
When it comes to getting from the airport to your ski resort in Austria, you’ve got three main options:
public transport, a private transfer, or a shared transfer
Each has its pros & cons.
Public transport in Austria is famously efficient and scenic, but juggling connections with ski bags after an early flight can be a headache, especially when snow hits or you’re travelling at weekends. Private transfers give you door-to-door comfort and flexibility, but the convenience comes with a higher price tag. That’s why Monsguide shared transfers are such a smart middle ground — you get the comfort of a direct, pre-booked journey with professional drivers and modern vehicles, but at a fraction of the cost of going private. No waiting in endless taxi queues, no changing trains in the cold — just a smooth, reliable ride straight to your accommodation.
Can I get public transport to my ski resort, and is it cheaper?
The answer is ‘Yes’… and ‘No’.
Austria’s public transport is reliable and good value, so most major ski resorts are reachable by airport shuttle bus, then train, then a final bus, train or taxi.
Of course, it will be much slower than a direct transfer and always includes at least one change, but it will usually be cheaper than a private transfer if you’re a solo traveler or couple.
The main trains (from Munich, Innsbruck & Salzburg central stations) run regularly from early morning to late in the evening. They’ll get you to the start of the valley.
But be aware that local trains & busses often stop running around 7pm and don’t start running again until around 7am. If you have an afternoon flight into Austria, or a morning flight to return home, you may have to get a taxi to the ‘main’ train station, and you’ll lose any money you may have saved.
How do I get from the airport to my ski resort with public transport?
Public Transport from Innsbruck Airport
Take the airport bus to Innsbruck Train Station.
There are sometimes direct trains to St. Anton, but almost all other resorts will require at least one more change.
-
Obergurgl: change to bus at the Ötztal-Bahnhof
-
Mayrhofen: change at Jenbach onto the Zillertalbahn
-
SkiWelt (Söll, Elmau, Sheffau etc.): Change to bus at Wörgl
Public Transport from Munich Airport
Take the airport S-Bahn to München Ost, then a train towards Innsbruck, Kufstein or Wörgl for the Skiwelt, Tirol or Salzburgerland resorts.
Change again to the local bus or train to your destination.
Public Transport from Salzburg Airport
Frequent public buses link the terminal with Salzburg Central Station.
From there, trains run directly to Zell am See.
You may need to make one more change onto a bus or train for resorts like Saalbach, Kaprun, Obertauern and the Ski Amadé ski area.
You can change at Wörgl or Jenbach for SkiWelt and Tirol resorts.
