While Sauze isn’t the Ibiza on snow it was 20 years ago, that’s not a bad thing. The skiers who partied here back then have grown up (just a little), and so has Sauze. What you’ll find now is a balance that works brilliantly: there’s still plenty of silly, late-night nonsense if that’s what you’re after, but there’s also a more relaxed, grown-up vibe. Think Aperol in deckchairs on the slopes in the sun, live music straight from the pistes and wine bars serving reasonably priced great quality local wine… but also a few tables to dance on, too.

Après Ski in Sauze d’Oulx is now more about choice. You can have it loud or laid-back, and often both in the same night.

🍻 Sauze d’Oulx Après Ski on the Mountain & Straight from the Slopes

Legally in Italy, the bars on the mountain can’t stay open after last lifts (unless there’s road access or a way to walk down), but that doesn’t mean Sauze doesn’t have apres.

  • Capanna Kind (On the Discount Card) → On the Sportinia plateau, this is where lunch blurs into après on a sunny afternoon. Self-service, cheap food & drink and great vibes. The terrace fills fast & at least one afternoon a week, there’ll be a DJ from 3pm. Use your Monsguide Discount Card for money off all food & drink.

  • Ghost Bar → At the bottom of the Clotes lift there’s a DJ or live music most days of the week. Once the lifts close, Ghost starts to fill up. It’s a great place to get the party started, with aperitivo of cheese, meats & nibbles to line your stomach.

  • Assietta (On the Discount Card) → In the main square, there’s great Aperitivo (free picky nibbles served with every drink any time between 4 – 8pm), often there’s a DJ on the outdoor terrace, and it’s great spot to catch the last rays of sun. With a younger crowd outside, indoors it has a lively atmosphere but table service and the chance to sit down and enjoy your Aperol, wine & beer while still being able to chat.

🍷 Wine bars & chilled vibes

Après doesn’t have to mean loud music and sticky floors. Sauze has a growing number of classy, comfortable spots that feel just as good for a quiet evening as they do for a warm-up before going out.

  • Il Lampione Enoteca (On the Discount Card) →  In the Old Town, it’s a wine lover’s dream, with a strong list of local Piedmont reds and whites. It’s also got an incredible selection of spirits, with some interesting cocktail combos. Small & intimate, you might struggle to get a table and they don’t allow standing, but there are bar seats that allow you to watch the cocktail making in action and the staff are highly knowledgeable about the drinks they serve.

  • Caffè della Seggiovia → Great aperitivo with a more Italian crowd. Small & can be a squeeze, but great atmosphere.

  • Moncrons  An English-run bar, loved by Sauze d’Oulx regulars. Low-key and friendly, with a proper welcoming feel. Great for a midweek drink when you’re not in party mode.

🎶 Live music & buzzing bars

Sauze still has its party spots — but they’re less “Ibiza on snow” and more “grown-up ski town with energy.”

  • Derby Bar → A Sauze institution. Classic ski bar atmosphere, friendly staff, and always a crowd.

  • Ghost → Go back once you’ve bar crawled around town and want to keep the party going until the small hours.

  • Pace yourself. A ski holiday is a marathon, not a sprint & remember it’s not cool to be over the limit on the pistes. Head down to town and unclip the skis or snowboard so you’re not a danger to yourself or anyone else if you’re having a big one.

When it comes to the best après songs of all time, there’s a clear divide between those who can’t get enough of Europop trashiness and, well, everyone else.

Austria’s skiers & snowboarders voted en masse, and dominated the Top Ten with their favourites. And so, the top spot goes to Johnny Däpp – a song so beloved, it doesn’t matter most people haven’t got a clue who sings. It doesn’t even matter that no one knows the words, beyond that glorious, hideous, brilliant earworm of a chorus.

Dapp, Dapp, Dapp, Johnny Dapp Dapp Dapp.

It’ll be in your head for days, and you won’t even mind.

From Mayrhofen to Gastein, Anton to Zell, this absolute banger has been the soundtrack to whole generations of holidaymakers, inadvisably snogging their reps/ski instructors/best mates, falling off tables, and downing Jäger.

Over in France, memories of Val d’Isere’s Cocorico kicking off with Thunderstruck by AC/DC every Tuesday night came in a close second. The slow and steady build up gives you just enough time to get another beer from the bar before long-arming it topless.

In joint third place comes Sweet Caroline & Country Roads. These two tunes are so inseparable in the minds of Söll’s ski veterans, they always have to be played back-to-back.

The Italian revellers went rogue, voting for anything from ‘Freed From Desire’ by Gala (which should be on everyone’s list, especially when the ski boot stamp starts) to ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince, which I’m pretty isn’t an après tune, but only made the list because during the 2019 season, Miravallino’s Wedneday night karaoke was the highlight of the après week.

Save Tonight by Eagle Eyed Cherry got a special mention from Andorra’s skiers & snowboarders, but only ‘if it’s played live in the Irish Bar by that man with his guitar’.

Unfortunately, everyone who’s ever been to Andorra can’t remember any more details than that,  because of the tax-free beer and cheap-as-chips shots that make it a favourite winter destination on a budget.

ABBA made the cut, but no one could decide between Gimme Gimme Gimme, Take A Chance On Me or Voulez-Vous, so ‘anything by ABBA’ can take seventh position.

Austria’s skiers & snowboarders tried to have Schatzi Schenk mir ein foto, Mama Laudaaa, Das Fliegerlied & Hey, wir wollen die Eisbaren sehen all in the Top Ten, but as they’re basically the same song with different dance moves, they’re all going together in eighth place.

Regardless of favourite bar, resort or country, everyone agreed on the legendary status of Zombie by The Cranberries.

And fighting for the final spot was Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey, & Roxanne by The Police (have a word with whoever voted for that one).

But after a tough battle, ultimately, Angels by Robbie Williams got our mountain lovers throwing their arms around each other’s shoulders, spilling the last of their beers and promising each other they’d never grow up, never stop skiing & snowboarding, and never stop coming to the mountains together.

This guy remixed it with Hey, Jude. I think whoever he is, he is the true winner of the Battle of the Bangerz.
